• ad for Hobby-Space, in file section.

Who all has downloaded the advertisement for Hobby-Space from the file area? I would really like it if all boards on the network placed the ad someplace on their board. I can't force it, but would be nice.

BiggieB from JerseyJam.com is raising his hand. It posted it on my BBS I think within 5 mins after you made the file available.

Finally just grabbed it myself -- forgot to on my main machine, and my laptop lacks an ANSI editor so I didn't actually get to look at it the other day when I downloaded it on that system.

Tis cool. I'll toss it on RP shortly.

On the nature of getting Hobby-Space really going, we do need to discuss and cement some things, since everything is still a bit how-ya-doing on setup.

Example: subs.txt was removed from SBBS recently, so that file is actually useless for the most modern builds (I put in everything manually!) so we will need exports of the message areas in every other format we can get, and also make SURE everything is standard - mainly the USOS section in documentation is presumably incorrectly named internally vs what SBBS will force the group internal names to be on the board.

Just some things I noticed and have been milling over. Still not fully sure how SBBS does routing of QWK message areas, since their physical arrangement in the message lists seems to be critical to this, but I'm not sure. Should ask Digital Man, but never had a good time asking questions for SBBS help on Dove-Net, which is sad since that's the place to do it. :\

I will make another subs.txt file.

No that's the thing, subs.txt is no longer an active message area import/export format.

    The export list now is:

    ³areas.bbs SBBSecho Area File º
    ³areas.ini SBBSecho Area File º
    ³*subs.ini Synchronet Shared Config º
    ³backbone.na FidoNet EchoList º
    ³newsgroup.lst USENET Newsgroup List º

So yeah, you would do best to export at complte set of those, and insure in documents that the board listing is always in identical order to how it is on YOUR board. I think that's a key factor in messages importing to the correct areas.

I did a quick google A.I search of qwk networks and areas.bbs, ect. This is what I got.

If you are hosting a QWK network, you do not need to use the areas.bbs file at all.
The areas.bbs file and the Export Areas option in scfg are strictly used for FidoNet (FTN) technology networks. Because QWK and FidoNet use completely different transport mechanisms, configuring FidoNet settings for a QWK network will break your setup.
How QWK Networks Work in Synchronet

No areas.bbs Needed: QWK packets simply pack up your local message areas directly and do not rely on centralized FTN area mapping files.
Hub vs. Node: In a QWK network, you are the Hub. Your users or downstream BBSes are the Nodes.
The Process: Nodes will connect to your Synchronet BBS to download a .QWK packet filled with messages and upload a .REP packet with their replies.

    Am I missing something sir?

area files are used in some software for FTN routing, but it's a valid import/export method for SBBS areas, and that's all in this case it would be being used for, providing users the option, and if this ever goes FTN and such is needed in a BBS package, it would already be there.

I have the contact information for the two guys to register as a FidoNet node. As you know I have been running FidoNet. Just let me know and I'll send their info your way. You have to request, and they have to set you up, before you can start.

I was talking about having hobby-space qwk network also have fido like capabilities. I don't know if I want to even try to setup fido-net. I hear it's hard, and I don't think I'm smart enough to set it up. Actually I heard it was a nightmare to setup lol

Ahh!! Opps..sorry about that. I read your post waaaay too fast. Yes, FTN would be nice...maybe works better than QWK? Hobby-Net is a FTN as well with node address at 954. Not even sure how to even start our own FTN on our systems. I'm sure it will be a fun learning exercise! :)

That's the funny thing, I know the gist of how it all works and am pretty sure I could get something working for the most part message area wise via FTN.

I would say FTN and QWK have equal annoyance in setup, if different in why they are annoying.

No, that's exactly what you do. Pick a net number that seems free, come up with a zone/node schema, and start setting things up.

I already have a schema for my network, I just need to finalize what the network will actually be like.

I do like some games that come with SBBS, but it isn't a main reason I BBS. Files bore me -- there are better ways to get any and all files you could want from a BBS, but the novelty is neat so I have a bit of stuff stashed on my board and may add more as time goes on. Fitting content.

Message areas and communications though, that's the jam.
